Do I need to install heavy software on my Mac? +
No! That is the core advantage of AmberCapsule. Unlike legacy cloud backup providers that install heavy background apps that eat up your battery and RAM, AmberCapsule uses 100% native macOS Time Machine. You only need the official, lightweight, open-source WireGuard client to maintain the encrypted tunnel.
Can other users or AmberCapsule staff see my backup files? +
Never. Each customer is assigned a cryptographically private WireGuard keypair and isolated in a jailed, password-protected OpenZFS dataset with strict Linux POSIX 0700 permissions. No cross-tenant access is physically possible. Furthermore, you can enable macOS FileVault / Time Machine disk encryption with your own private passphrase before files leave your Mac.
What happens if my Mac is stolen, damaged, or lost? +
You can perform a full bare-metal restore on any new or replacement Mac! Simply connect to your AmberCapsule WireGuard profile or mount your network share during macOS Migration Assistant / macOS Recovery. Every single file, app, password, and preference will be restored exactly as it was.
How does recovery work? Are there limits on file restores? +
You enjoy unlimited granular restores: you can browse your Time Machine timeline and restore individual files, documents, or photos at any time for free. Each plan also includes 1 full bare-metal disaster recovery per machine per year (rebuilding your complete Mac after catastrophic hardware loss or replacement). Additional full bare-metal restores are available at cost.
Will this slow down my internet browsing or interfere with my home DNS? +
Not at all. We utilize clean split-tunnel routing: only Time Machine traffic to secure-tunnel.ambercapsule.com goes through the tunnel. All other internet browsing, streaming, and custom DNS (such as Pi-hole or NextDNS) stay completely on your standard Wi-Fi connection.
What makes OpenZFS better than a standard external hard drive? +
Standard external USB drives use filesystems that can silently corrupt photos and files over time without warning (known as bit-rot). OpenZFS writes self-verifying checksums for every block and runs continuous scrubbing to detect and heal corrupted data automatically.
